Digital Art – Discovering The Shine Within Us | Bookosmia

8+ |

Sara's Art activities for kids Bokoosmia

Hey friends! Sara, here. Love digital art?
Art by Keya Malhotra14 year old Keya Malhotra, a Bookosmian from Delhi, makes us think with this stunning digital art about letting a child shine on their own terms! Do you also love digital art? Send us!
She goes The Heritage School, Rohini.
=========================================================
Digital art - Discovering the shine within us
Everybody is born with a light inside them that burns brightly. When young, one is callow and unconditioned, thus accordingly credulous and tender, their light shines ever so brightly. A child’s light stirs something in you, something that is indescribable, yet confusingly pleasant.
It is as a child matures that this light starts to fade… by experiences, events, people and places that make one forget how to let their light shine bright. Emerging into adulthood and maturity tends to make life darker and seemingly pointless.
To overcome the apparent darkness that is so prominent in the contemporary world, one needs to realise their individuality and discover what makes them unique. One shall not hide their light merely to preserve their ego and live by social norms that bind our hands and restrict us from reaching our full potential. One needs to rediscover their light and allow it to shine.

Essay by Aarav SinghHow did you celebrate Independence Day? 10 year old Aarav Singh, a Bookosmian from Portsmouth, USA, made wonderful paintings about India. Check out his art!

Aarav is a student of Dondero Elementary School.

========================================================

India
I made these drawings to celebrate Independence Day.

My Nanu (grandfather) who is no more, always appreciated these kinds of art work.

Pet – My dog Simba

I have always loved making art. I have never been hesitant while making art, I just do it and then see my result at the end. Art is kind of a meditation to me, since I’m only focused on making the artwork.

I came up with the drawing after my mom showed me a post from Bookosmia for the artwork. I chose to draw my dog as my subject. He is my best friend and I got him 2 years ago on Friendship Day- 4th of August 2019.

While creating my artwork, at the beginning, I started making a few drafts, but I wasn’t thinking of them as drafts, so I tried to make it look good. I wasn’t satisfied with my first 2, so when I began making this, I looked at my dog, then made the art. While in the course of making my drawing, I had to make lots of tiny tweaks to the body of my dog, and also a ton of tweaks on the head. At the end, I was finished with the drawing and started to add detail (fur, shading, hair color). I was very happy with my final piece.

Independence day drawings - Jai hind!

I didn’t try to make a story, but if I did, it would have been about my dog’s life. I crafted this with 2 different photos of him, one from when he was a year old, and one from now, when he’s 2.

My favorite artwork would be this one, since I worked a lot on this, and I also think that my dog liked the drawing too, and because I didn’t need any help on the drawing.

Independence day drawings - Jai hind!

What I love about this art is that it looks like he is staring back at me, something I know that I have a hard time to incorporate into my artwork: to make it lifelike.

Olympics

What made me come up with this drawing was watching the Tokyo Olympics archery matches. Again, I have never felt hesitant making art.

I chose this theme because of watching different archery matches on tv, and because archery is cool. I was also hoping India to win.

I felt good throughout the whole process. I felt great after completing it.

Independence day drawings - Jai hind!

What I love about it is that the archery symbol has the 5 Olympic ring colors on it; blue, yellow, black, green, and red.

This picture doesn’t tell a story.

My favorite artwork is the one that I made of my dog, because it really looks lifelike to me.

Story by Riddhima MishraToday is Hiroshima Day. Do you know why this day is so important? 8 year old Riddhima Misra, a Bookosmian from Kalyan tells us with a beautiful drawing why we should never take peace for granted.
She goes to Lodha World School.
========================================================
Hiroshima Day - No more wars, let’s maintain peace
Hiroshima Day is observed on August 6th every year. It aims to promote peace. This day is a reminder of the bombing attack on Hiroshima by the United States during World War II.
In 1945, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima. The nuclear bomb that was dropped in Hiroshima city was named ‘Little Boy’. Three days later, on August 9, the second bomb was dropped in Nagasaki. The nuclear bomb that was dropped in Nagasaki city was named ‘Fat man’.
The explosions killed thousands of people. Apart from the killings, the Japanese also suffered from terrible burns and radiation sickness.
Hiroshima day aims to raise awareness about the dangers of nuclear weapons and nuclear energy.
This sad incident reminds us to put peace first every day.

Madhubani art - Painting vegetables grown in India

Art in the form of paintings and sculpture is a form of expression of human emotions and social realities.

The Madhubani painting is famous for its use of natural elements. Traditionally, this painting was crafted using natural colours. All colours were extracted from plant leaves, flowers, fruits and other parts of plants.

Here I have tried to paint vegetables native to India.

Doodle art - Circles, spirals and lots of fun

You know how much I love to doodle
Hmm..a little more than masala noodle

A circle that moves into a swirl
Best describes the doodle world

Spirals, packed circles, flowers galore
Each design I separately adore.

Triangles,zigzag crisscross lines
Do whatever that comes to your mind

Doodling relaxes my brain
And throws all my boredom in the drain

Doodling is my passion, it is an emotion
Someday I aspire to take it as a profession.

Once there lived a stegosaurus. It was different from others. It liked humming birds. One day, when it woke up early morning, its’ mouth turned into a beak.

Next day, it’s long tail became long feathers, but its’ size did not change. It was now a rare species of dinosaur!

Everyone called it the hummingsaurous. But the only problem was it could only suck nectar off flowers, but that could not fill its tummy.  Sadly it remained hungry most of the time.

========================================================

I imagine a world where cars are flying, colourful trees, flying fish, purple sun and orange clouds. I imagine a world filled with my own choice of colours where everything is clean and magical.

Nature drawings - The magic of imagination

This art is my imagination of the magical secrets of the ocean.  I have used watercolours and oil pastels to create this effect.

The magic of underwater has always attracted me. I sometimes imagine myself diving into deep water and watching it all myself. I dream of colourful corals, fishes, octopus and many different type of creatures.

In this painting I have tired to imagine and create the underwater world scene.

Nature drawings - The magic of imagination

This art work is inspired by the beauty of nature which is filled with so many colours.

I collected all these nature elements and have created a colorful landscape to celebrate colours scattered all around us on our earth.

I was a bit hesitant to do artwork in the beginning because of how it could go wrong or how much time it takes but I started to enjoy it after some time.
Art showcase

Now, I like to draw once every week because it is so much fun.

Art showcase

I choose something different in my artwork every time.

Art showcase

It gets boring creating the same thing again and again. So if I do a bird drawing one day, the next day I will draw something like animals.

Art showcase

While creating my artwork,I tend to feel bored as it takes a lot of time.

Art showcase

When half of it is done, I start to get excited and when finished, I am very proud of what I have achieved.

Art showcase

One of my artworks that, I think, tells a story is ‘The Wolf’ – The wolf is howling, trying to find his pack on a full moon night. He can be a person who was bitten by a werewolf and turned into one.

Art showcase

My favourite artwork is the cat and the butterfly artwork (Titled ‘Friends’). It was the first animal drawing I made, it was really detailed and I had a lot of fun creating the butterfly, filling it with patterns.

Art showcase

But my favourite painting work with colours was the sea painting which was filled with lots of colours. It was my first drawing of the sea and I liked making the waves in a different form.

Art gives me pleasure and it helps me feel relaxed and happy. If I start a drawing I get immersed in the drawing until my arm starts to ache!

I like to try different mediums and explore many techniques. I have done many acrylic paintings but I really want to do an oil painting one day. I really want my art to be realistic and proportional.

I have always loved art, and I still love making it!
 I never give up till my art is perfect
The reason I started making art was that my art teacher introduced me to it and I became so interested that I started searching more about it on the internet.
 I never give up till my art is perfect
But on the internet, there were so many different types of paintings, with different supplies.
 I never give up till my art is perfect

I chose to work with paint, markers, and oil pastels because I feel like I can make the best drawing out of those supplies.

 I never give up till my art is perfect

I also chose those items because I feel very comfortable using them.

 I never give up till my art is perfect

I’ve made some paintings where I didn’t like my first copy so I made another copy and I loved it.

 I never give up till my art is perfect

I would make another one because I wanted the painting to be perfect and until it wasn’t perfect I would not give up.

Isha is a student of S D S M School for Excellence, Jamshedpur, Jharkhand.

================================================================

My recent art work is of Radha Krishna and it is also a Mithila painting.
I love making Madhubani paintings
I have been drawing since a very young age. I never really hesitated as in the beginning people around me were really encouraging. And any kind of artwork helps people to understand you in a better way.
Every time I choose to take different subjects as there are a diverse range of artforms.
I love making Madhubani paintings
I love making Madhubani paintings as it tells the story in different frames majorly about the rituals and culture of festivals and special occasions of Mithila.
These paintings are made of bright natural colours and are famous for their geometrical patterns. And they also have very defining figures also.
I love making Madhubani paintings
When my brain gets filled with thoughts I just pour them on the paper. And then it feels nice and light. But seriously, when I start working on any painting I just think about when is it going to complete!
I love making Madhubani paintings
While making it, my art becomes my world for me and every time  I make anything different from the previous one, it lets me think from a different perspective.
I love making Madhubani paintings
I make sure every picture I draw should have a story. So that whoever sees it, should know its base and what it is trying to depict.
This is also a reason I chose to make Mithila paintings primarily.
For instance, my recent Radha Krishna painting tells us about the true love and connection they have.

Art by Keya MalhotraPrepare to be stunned by this stippled (art made by small dots) art work that comes with an equally powerful write-up on never giving up by 14 year old Keya Malhotra, a Bookosmian from Delhi. Must-read!

Keya is a student of The Heritage School, Rohini.

================================================================

Exhausted but not given up

One of the only things we can unambiguously say about life is that it is constantly changing.

Sometimes you’re up, sometimes you’re down.
Sometimes you flourish and sometimes you crumble
Sometimes you’re efficacious and other times you’re debilitated.

But it’s when you’re exhausted… despondent… too enervated to carry on, that you grow and thrive.

Everybody can be fulfilled and happy when life goes their way… the real challenge of growth comes when life knocks you down.

The lessons you take from your mistakes and obstacles are often fundamental to later success.

So when you’re backed against the wall, don’t cripple yourself and hide away… push back harder!

It may seem pointless at first, but you can never connect the dots looking into the future, you can only make sense of life looking back at the past. Later on in life, you will be grateful that you didn’t give up! That you stood back up no matter how many times you fell! True life is hard… but compared to what?

Just because you’re exhausted right now, doesn’t mean this is the end… its life giving you a chance to grow…

================================================================

The reason I made this artwork is that when I was sitting in quarantine, I went online, and saw many different images of the kind of artwork I made. The artwork is mainly composed of oil pastel mixed with some colored pencil shading around the edges.
My beautiful journey with oil pastels
I also love making artwork because I have not always enjoyed it as much as I do now. In the beginning, I was very hesitant and didn’t know if I could make art at all.
My beautiful journey with oil pastels
The paintings I saw online were so exquisite and beautiful. So I decided to make my own original version of these paintings with my own imagination. I thought it would take me many hours, but I seemed to get it on my first or second try!
My beautiful journey with oil pastels
I think that my picture does tell some sort of a story; it may be that in the first painting, a photographer took a picture of the sunset. The one with the swing with the colorful background might be that there was a swing in the rainbow!?
My beautiful journey with oil pastels
There are many different possibilities as you can imagine!

Sara reads Covid Story from Bookosmian Prisha MoitraThere is a ‘spring’ in my step as spring has arrived! 9 year old Prisha Moitra, a Bookosmian from Kolkata feels it too as she puts down her happiness on canvas and sends us a beautiful write-up about art too!

Prisha is a student of Word to Word Consulting and goes to Indus Valley World School, Kolkata.

================================================================

Art and I go a long way back. As a toddler, I loved to scribble with varieties of colours on the walls, bedsheets, paper. I remember having used my hands and legs as an easel too and painting them with different hues. My favourite back then was hand painting, which we did at school.

When I was five years old, my parents decided that I needed a proper tutor to nurture this hobby that was close to my heart. I soon realised that I was someone who couldn’t draw following a set of rules. Like, my colours always seemed to disobey me; they always slipped out of the dotted border my tutor drew. One more thing that I found out was that all my paintings had to have a personal touch. I didn’t always draw the way my tutor taught me. If I did not connect with my art, I ended up not liking it.

Spring is here! So is my art!

Soon I was able to draw all sorts of animals, trees, houses, sceneries, fruits and veggies, birds and many more!!

I love to take inspiration from real-life things to draw as well. Like, I try to draw birds that come and sit on our balcony. And the stray dogs that roam the streets.

Spring is here! So is my art!

Whoever made birds had a good sense of colour. Birds, with their fluorescent and vibrant feathers and gregarious nature, have always fascinated me. And, I also believe that when they sing their sweet songs, it is a signal that Spring is arriving!

Spring is here! So is my art!

When I first thought of making these pictures and sat down to do so, I was immensely excited and a bit confused since I did not know where to start from.

Which colours to pick? Which birds to draw? These questions occupied my mind I even thought deeply about how to make the perfect picturesque spring.

Creating the art that fits the theme just right can be really difficult sometimes. I had to draw several rough sketches before I finally felt like these are the birds, I know will describe spring the best. I even found the right colours for my trees and flowers. When I had the final work in front of me, I felt satisfied and happy. In my mind, I had always pictured this happy place with a lot of foliage and all the colours of Spring. The hues that my birds had on their plumage was a perfect complement to the scenery I had drawn.

My favourite was the eagle that seemed to have popped out of an imaginary world where everything seemed young, fresh and radiant.

Spring is here! So is my art!

Each drawing I believe has a persona of its own and together they narrate the absolute tale of nature’s beauty and change. While I filled my birds’ drawings with colours, I could not help but wonder how imaginative the creator of the real birds and everything around must be.

Art with Sara by Ema Anand from Sharjah Prepare to be blown over by the art work of 11 year old Ema Anand from Sharjah. And do check out her thoughts about her art too! Do you also paint? I am waiting to see your paintings and thoughts!

================================================================

Drawing has had a profound impact on my life. Without drawing, I don’t know who I would be, where I would be, or how I would deal with everything that happens in life. Drawing is the most powerful tool I have.

Art with Sara by Ema Anand from Sharjah

Drawing helps me discover, reflect on, and express myself. It helps me feel happier and more confident and has given me an extra sense of identity and purpose in life. It keeps me honest with myself.

Almost every time I sit down to draw in my sketchbook, what comes out is a direct reflection of how I’m feeling at that moment. My sketchbook becomes a visual diary that can illuminate feelings I didn’t realize I had. I turn off my thinking brain, move my pen across the paper and would start drawing.

Art with Sara by Ema Anand from Sharjah

Not only does drawing help me become motivated and inspire me, it also helps me clear my head by reflecting on and clarifying those thoughts and feelings.

When I begin a drawing feeling agitated, grumpy, and stressed out, I almost always finish a drawing feeling more relaxed, content, and at peace. I draw my stress and worries.

Art with Sara by Ema Anand from Sharjah

Many people have trouble choosing what subject they want to draw on.

The subject should be one you are interested in – genuinely interested and engaged in.
Give new ideas a little time and thought before deciding to make them the subject of a work of art.

Art with Sara by Ema Anand from Sharjah

There are many art mediums you can choose from. They include:
– Watercolor
– Acrylic paintings
– Oil paintings
– Sketches
– Coloring
– Markers

Art with Sara by Ema Anand from Sharjah

Painting/Drawing is not a theory. It is not a media where you take notes and do it within a limited time. Art is something that you have to practice. It is where you have to be patient enough to finish it. It may take days, weeks, month or even years in certain paintings.

Art with Sara by Ema Anand from Sharjah

One image attempting to capture the essence of the written story sharing its page is called a painting/drawing in my point of view.
For example, the painting which I drew, the man drinking tea from the saucer, tells a short story.

Can you figure it out?

Art with Sara by Ema Anand from Sharjah

Another great example is the painting of “The last supper” drawn by Leonardo DaVinci.

The painting represents the scene of the Last Supper of Jesus with his apostles. Leonardo has depicted the consternation that occurred among the Twelve Apostles when Jesus announced that one of them would betray him.

That is all I have for now readers. Have a wonderful day ahead!

She ran home and showed them to her mother. Her mother threw them out of the window thinking they are dirty and full of germs. Sally felt sad. She went to her room and kept crying. After a while she slept. Next morning she woke up and saw many golden feathers in her room. She was overjoyed and thanked God!

I myself was not aware that I can paint.  Before lockdown, my father had got canvas at home to gift it to a friend who loves painting, however, due to lockdown my father could not gift it. So I decided to paint on it. While painting I never had any specific idea on what I will paint.

Apart from basics in drawing or just drawing as a hobby, Ganjifa Art is the first art form in drawing, I  learnt from my teacher at the art class. That is one of the reasons for me to choose to do Ganesha.

Ganjifa means playing cards. The cards are typically circular although some  rectangular decks have been produced.

Art, what I believed it to be, was a way of expressing feelings which are  inexpressible in words.

Art by kids for kids with Sara Bookosmia

Eventually I learned that it could be done simply to  satisfy oneself or just for joy.

Art by kids for kids with Sara Bookosmia

But what does my art mean to me? Surely my artworks do not just mean a
mere collection to me. It is a valuable collection that constantly reminds me of my hard work and sometimes I also think of wonderful memories associated with the paintings.

Art by kids for kids with Sara Bookosmia
Back in 2015,my mum put me in art classes, where I started to master my  basics. After all the question is what kept me coming to art all the time?

Ganesh Art by kids with Sara Bookosmia

I think that every photo taken, comes in with a memory. The very same way, I paint because every painting transforms into a beautiful moment in my mind.

Those beautiful moments gives me so much bliss and joy that i never want to stop painting.

Art by kids for kids with Sara Bookosmia
I remember one such event ,when I was gazing at my painting of goddess Saraswati. I had found the picture in a book and it kept reminding me of the stories in the book.

Every time I completed a part of the painting or even the  whole picture it gave me a sense of accomplishment.

When I was in grade 1, I didn’t draw so well in my drawing books and notebooks nor in other subjects . I didn’t know how important drawing was and how it would affect my future studies.

I wouldn’t join drawing classes because I would love to play video games  instead of learning drawing. Even when my parents forced me to go, I was still stuck with my stubborn behaviour.

One fine day at school, it was drawing period and I got scolding from my  teacher, asking, “Why can’t you draw like your sister?’’

Everyone in my class laughed at me and that day gave me motivation to start  focusing on my art.

One day, in the month of May, my mother was browsing on Facebook, when she found out about the online classes for ‘Mandala Art.’
I was not that interested because I had never done it before, or even heard about in Mandala. But, when I started doing it I gained more and more interest.
The reason why I got MORE interested was because of my teacher (Ms. Karuna) who always taught me the best and motivated me.

My teacher taught in  a very clear way and I found her references to be amazing. Under her  guidance I gained a lot of patience, confidence and concentration in me.

Hey everyone, your friend Sara here! Welcome to my colourful ‘Art with Sara’ section.

Today’s wonderful artwork and thoughts around it, are shared by 10 year old S. Shivani Devi from Chennai .

S. Shivani Devi studies 6th standard in N.S.N. Memorial School. Her hobby is dancing – Bharatanatyam. Her ambition is to  become a doctor. She is interested in arts and crafts.
================================================================
In my childhood, while I used to go to Hindi class, my brother used to go to  drawing class.  This provoked a huge interest in me for art. I finally convinced my parents and joined the drawing class.
I loved drawing, especially mixing colours. When I finished the drawing and  started with painting, I would be really happy.
I love art work. Recently, my teacher gave me an activity to paint on a cloth. I really thank her because it made me realize the joy of painting on a cloth. It  was really interesting. This painting is based on Jammu and Kashmir design. In Kashmir the earliest records of this goes back to the 17th century. It was primarily worn by Kings and Royal Courtiers.

Painting on cloth is difficult. We have to spread the cloth in order to paint. It was extremely difficult. But, when I finished it, I was delighted!
Here is my favourite painting. I like it because it depicts a calm sunset scenery. I painted it on a canvas board using acrylic paint. This was my first painting on a canvas board. So, it was special to me.

Today’s wonderful doodle artworks are shared by 12 year old Meher Gandhi from Vadodara.

================================================================

Today I will tell you about my transformation from a “doodling is not for me person” to “wow! I can doodle so well” person.

I used to see many of my school friends ‘doodle.’ I loved them, the diminutive designs they all made. But I always thought that I’m not wired to doodle.

Those friends had a group in which they would share all kinds of doodles. My English teacher doodles very well and they had started something called Doodlethon. I wanted to draw them too, but I never thought I had the spirit within me.

Slowly, I gathered and mustered up all my courage, that I hadn’t used since decades and picked up a pencil to draw the outline. I was about to give up after drawing the outline as it had confirmed that I was not cut for doodling.

It was then, that my English teacher, Ma’am Srilakshmi  emboldened me with her wit to try my hand and told me to keep striving till I was satisfied.

Guess what? It worked!

Not only did I complete my outline but also the interior minute doodle work. I  sent her a picture and I was thrilled that she found it wonderful.

This drove my spirits up. I developed a liking for doodling. I started on my second one and it was simply lovely. And so , I continued. Day by day my doodles became superior and finer. I must admit, that once my barrier of fear  was broken, the journey was satisfying and enjoyable.

Art with Sara doodle by kids Bookosmia

This connected me to many folks who are fine doodlists and their doodles helped enhance my learning.

My best friends also helped me draw better as they encouraged me. It was indeed a major necessity for me to draw well.

One of my all-time favourite doodles is ‘The Butterfly.’ This is close to my heart
because I can relate to it. The way a butterfly symbolizes the transformation into something beautiful, I too feel that I have evolved gradually in this learning process and transformed into a confident doodlist.

I must say, the internet here has a very brawny use, which works as a starter  and gives you many innovative ideas to ignite your mind.

With this, I not only learnt how to doodle, outline, trace and hold the pen with
confidence but also learnt a very worthy, valuable and important lesson that is to ‘Never Give Up!’

Recently, her acrostic poem on ‘coronavirus’ was accepted for publication in the Young Writers’ Write to Unite book, due to be released in  September 2020.
==============================================================

 I decided to do Madhubani art to showcase one of the richest art heritage of  India. Madhubani painting  is practiced in Mithila. This painting is done with a variety of tools, including fingers, twigs, brushes, nib-pens, and matchsticks and using natural dyes and pigments. It is characterized by its eye-catching geometrical patterns. There is ritual content for particular occasions, such as birth or marriage, and festivals, such as Holi, Surya Shasti, Kali Puja,  Upanayana, and Durga Puja.

Art with Sara Madhubani Bookosmia
The paintings were traditionally done on freshly plastered mud walls and  floors of huts, but now they are also done on cloth, handmade paper and canvas. Bright colours like red, yellow, blue, green, orange are used for these  paintings.

The next paining I share is titled ‘A village in Bengal.’Having been born and brought up in U.K. and with patients hailing from Bengal, I always wondered how the villages of Bengal and India in general would look like. Although I’ve been to India, I’ve only visited Kolkata and never been outside the city. I came across a painting of a quintessential Bengal village by the great Indian artist Gaganendranath Tagore and was inspired to draw my own take of a Bengal village.

A Village in Bengal Art with Sara by Aditi from UK Bookosmia
Durga puja is arguably the most important cultural event every year on a Bengali’s calendar. The whole state stops to celebrate the five days when the goddess Durga along with her four children leaves her husband Shiv’s abode and returns to her maternal home. This picture,Ardhanarishwar, depicts half Durga and half Shiv in perfect balance with each other. It signifies how the masculine and feminine energies are in a perfect balance in this universe and in reality are two sides of the same coin and these energies are inseparable (or the same) from each other.
Ardhanarishwar Durga Shiv Art with Sara by Aditi UK Bookosmia

I have always enjoyed drawing and painting from a young age. During lockdown, we had a lot of time to pursue our extracurricular activities and hobbies and I started out by self- learning various painting and sketching techniques with various media like graphite, charcoal, oil pastels, colour  pencils and water colour. I went onto online training and in the last couple of years I also had few sessions of sketching techniques from a teacher.

My dad and granddad paint quite well and particularly my grand dad set me  several challenges to do. As with everything, the more I sketched and painted, the more confident I became.

Recently, I set up a fundraiser to sketch or paint for people in return for a small donation which went to NHS. I offered to sketch or paint anything of their choice. This way, I sketched portraits of people from their photographs. Many asked me to draw anything I wished and in these situations, I chose to paint a variety of landscapes with different media as I really enjoy doing landscapes with bright colours. I’ve also sketched animals and birds in various media.

Shading bird Art with Sara by Aditi UK Bookosmia

I think drawing a portrait from a photograph is quite hard as it has to look like the real person with the specific features unlike a landscape which can be anything to your imagination. So mistakes are very easy to spot on a portrait. Many a times, during the initial stages I’ve felt that the art work isn’t really turning out well but in the end, it’s not been too bad. There’s always a feeling of happiness and satisfaction on completing any work as it’s your creation.

Deer Shading Art with Sara by Aditi UK Bookosmia

I think all the pictures have a story to tell. And they’ve taught me a lot, not only about different sketching and painting techniques but I also learnt about the ‘Ardhanarishwar‘ concept and  Indian art through my Madhubani painting. My deer painting in particular, reminds me of our forests that are home to so many animals and birds and how important it is to conserve the earth’s greenery for our own survival and maintain nature’s balance.

A bride….who is she? She is a transformation. Not of one life, but many. With  her devotion she starts a journey, but at the same time there are so many thoughts going in her mind. My art signifies all those thoughts of a bride. Every  doodle of art is an expression of her feelings, values and her knowledge.

During the lockdown period, I have watched the TV show “Shree Krishna” and it inspired me to create various paintings of Lord Krishna and Radha.

I do see photographs of Lord Krishna through various means and draw the painting in my own way and color patterns.

There is always a hidden message behind my art work and it depends on the theme of paintings. This “Lord Radha-Krishna” painting tells the story of love and devotion of Radha towards Lord Krishna and the precious time they spent together.

I love to do abstract and composite style paintings. Paintings based on nature and natural objects are my cup of tea. I do face a bit of challenge while painting human faces. I am practicing trying various techniques to overcome this challenge.

This write up by 12 year old Ira Ratnaparkhi from  Hongkong is so refreshing,  with her honesty and passion oozing out. Ira was a participant at MeMeraki’s brilliant art workshops, a company committed to revive the attention for Indian folk art across the world.

=================================================================

I decided to do the Patachitra workshop because I was bored at home during the summer holidays and you can’t go out due to the pandemic. Also wanted   to do it because I thought of trying something new other than Madhubani,  which I have tried to learn before. I have always been interested in drawing and art and love to draw or paint since childhood.

Art with Sara young artist Ira Bookosmia

I chose Patachitra and Warli because they looked a bit easy to do, and I was interested in Patachitra. Though both the drawings were not that easy to  draw.  When I was doing the background of the Patachitra, I used some of my   Madhubani techniques and double lined everything. When we were drawing   the Warli, I used brown and red paint and white paint for the Warli people.

In my drawing, The Warli tells the story of normal people doing their work. The  story could also be that they are cleaning and making food because it’s a special occasion or festival. The Patachitra tells the story of Ganesha. The  artist told us that he had to draw Ganesha more than 100 times when he was a  student. No wonder his is so good!

Art with Sara young artist Ira Hong Kong Bookosmia

I love to draw and paint because it makes me peaceful and happy. Since I don’t  like to talk too much, I paint. When I draw, I love to listen to music. It helps me  focus more and get the painting done quicker.

I have tried different kinds of  mediums such as watercolour, canvas, acrylic,  pencils and sketching, nibs etc. Usually, I can sit for a long time in one place  and paint for hours if you let me. Sometimes it takes one day to complete a  painting and sometimes it takes me many days.

I chose to draw in the first place because my mum said I should learn a type of  art. I chose to draw Madhubani as a project in year 6 for my school exhibition  project, and since then I have gotten better at it.

I think everyone should learn a different kind of folk art from their home  country.  In India, there are many folk arts to choose from, and each state has  its own style of folk art and handlooms and design motifs. Indian folk art is  very beautiful. They think of lines in different ways.

Even if you love painting you still need to learn it, as an experienced teacher  can teach many secrets and techniques. I have learnt the techniques of applying layers and correcting mistakes from my painting class. Sometimes I have to do more than 4 layers on one painting just to get the right texture of  the colour and blending.

When I get impatient, I spoil the painting. I also get  upset when the teacher  and I do not agree on the exact shade or corrections. I love painting and hope  to try oil painting and many more kinds of folk art.

The workshops were very fun in general and it was nice to use this time at home to learn new art forms.

=================================================================

I really love Indian art. Before I started my folk art workshops, I never knew  that there are so many art forms within India and I was amazed!

Art with Sara Aashesha Bookosmia

It was a great feeling to attend art workshops because one gets to know the  story behind the art form and the artist and what all struggles did the artists  face.

I have always been the person who would sit down and start drawing and doodling every day, but when I saw the how detailed Indian art was, I was  spellbound and I started to take more interest in that! It looked really intricate but the artist would always make it easy for us to understand and would tell us beautiful stories that brought a smile to my face each time.

Some of my favourite art forms are Pattachitra, Madhubani and Gond. I can’t stop looking at those paintings, it just makes me feel so nice. Every weekend I attend workshops and learn new forms and I even look forward to attending the kids workshops.

Now my knowledge of Indian art has increased and I have made numerous paintings and I am proud of each one of them. I would say that this has been partially what I have doing all throughout quarantine and I would love to stay in touch with all the artists and would be glad to meet them one day!

Art With Sara Series #7- “Art helped me drive away the boredom of lockdown,” says Atharv, 6 years, Nagpur

Here is 6 year old Atharv Tiwari of DPS Nagpur talking about how art helped him break the monotony of lockdown life, as he churned out his wonderful creations.

===============================================================

Art and craft is to draw pictures and make things using our hands. During  lockdown, I was getting a little bored so my mother guided me to draw  pictures and fill them with colours. In the beginning, I was wondering how to  draw interesting pictures. Then, my mother showed me the drawing book  where I used to draw pictures with the help of alphabets and numbers.

It truly helped me and I  began enjoying my drawing with different colours. In the month of April, my online school classes started. My class teacher guided all of us to make craft items with the help of different pictures by following step by step instructions. My few art and craft activities which gave me new learning in my life.

During my online classes, I made Piggy Bank which helped me to save money. Then I made Five Animal Puppets-I made this using paper, drew animals and  pasted it on a finger shaped paper made by me and I also wrote story on it, named ‘The Clever Elephant.’

I also made Day and Night-I enjoyed painting this a lot and learnt that  there are different phases of moon like half moon and full moon. My concentration is improving because of doing art and craft activities.

My drawing to respect Corona Warriors was liked by my family and class  teacher. I drew beautiful drawing for my class teacher because teachers are  like God. I love doing art and craft activities. I am thankful to my mother and class teacher as they helped me and kept me busy during these lockdown
days.

Almost all my art and craft work was done by using waste things of home. Art and craft activity had made me little creative and expressive. It’s the best way to keep oneself happy and busy. I enjoy colouring and painting.

Here is a girl on a mission!

=================================================================

During Lockdown, these art classes have inspired me to become an artist.  Every time I paint, I get better at it.

Art with Sara Aayat London Bookosmia

I joined these classes because I wanted to get better at art. I also joined these  art classes because I knew that only a few families are doing these art forms. This means that in a few years, these art forms will become extinct.

We have to learn about these art forms more so that we can pass it on to others and we can save these precious art forms.

Art with Sara Aayat London Bookosmia

When I finish each painting, I feel amazed because my painting looked so good. I have also learnt that India has a lot of art forms.

I have learnt many art forms from India so are. Art with Sara Aayat London Bookosmia

Some of them are Phad Art from Rajasthan, Pichwai from Rajasthan, Assamese Scroll from Assam, Gond from Bhopal, Warli from Maharashtra, Pattachitra from Bengal and Orissa, Mata Ni Pachedi from Gujarat and Kalamkari from Andhra Pradesh.

My favourite artform is Phad Art because it’s very colourful.

Art with sara Aayat London Bookosmia

When I read books, it’s like my brain is stretching to think more about the scenes and the writing and then I picture the scene in my mind. These art classes have also helped me with my concentration.

I know that every GOND Painting has a story behind it and a few more art forms also have stories too.Art has made me much happier and has also made me forget all the bad things in life.

Now when I look at a painting, I want to know what artform it is and what is the story behind it. I am so thankful that art classes are here.

I love art because I like to decorate. I feel very happy when I complete my art so we can decorate our home with my art.

Also, I love doing activities with art. I like using highlighters, pencils, crayons, markers and paint brushes to draw and color my art.

I liked Madhubani, Cheriyal scroll and Pichwai art workshops. I also love doing abstract art because I can draw whatever I want and use my imagination.

Sometimes my art tells a story – like once I made an art about pillows jumping up and down. I will continue working on art so I can get better at my art forms.

Here is 7 year old Jaanvi from London, a participant at MeMeraki’s folk art workshops, sharing a write up as beautiful as her art.

=================================================================

I am an art-lover and I love all forms of art. Painting has always been my most favourite and when my Mum asked if I wanted to join a folk arts workshop, I jumped with joy and I have been loving these classes since then.

I used to spend hours and hours drawing and colouring stuff I imagine. But now with proper online classes, I am learning different types of art.

I enjoy the time spent in doing these paintings. The detail each painting has is amazing and I forget how much time I am spending on it.

The happiness a completed painting gives, is not something I can say in words. I love showing it to all my family, friends and teachers and love it when they say
how good I am at it.

It is difficult sometimes when the paintings are very detailed, but I still try my best to finish it.

Every picture tells a story, always. Even if there is nothing known about it. You can always imagine how things would have been if the picture was real.

Art With Sara #1- “Sometimes my art tells a story,” says Khushee Desai,9 years, San Jose

Here is 9 year old Khushee Desai from San Jose, California, a participant at MeMeraki’s folk art workshops, sharing a vibrant write up on what runs in the mind of a young artist.

=================================================================

My mom had found out about folk art workshops online. She had me try one and I started to like them. So I continued and now I have done many styles. I have been interested in art since I was about three years old.
Art with Sara San Jose California Bookoosmia
I choose a subject in my artwork based on things around me and things from  my past. When creating an artwork, its hard to think of a topic and then represent it with things. While working on it is so much fun, to play around with the colors and to draw the designs.Finally finishing is the best part because I get to hang them on the walls of my house.
Art with Sara Khushee San Jose Bookosmia
Sometimes my art tells a story but most times it doesn’t what can it be.  I once  created an art based on Harry Potter and was trying to portray myself in the  school of Hogwarts and the sorting hat was sorting me into a house and it screamed Gryffindor!! And it had all the characters of Harry Potter that I liked. And I added patterns I learnt in the workshop in my painting.
