We celebrate Bharat Ratna APJ Abdul Kalam’s birthday this week. 12 year old Harsita Sunandini Nahak, a Bookosmian from Odisha, tells us about him.

Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul kalam was born and raised in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. He studied physics and aerospace engineering. He worked as a scientist at the Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). He had a big role in India’s civilian space programme and military.
He was given the title ‘Missile Man of India’ for his work on the development of ballistic missile and launch vehicle technology. He led India’s Pokhran-ll nuclear test in 1998..
Kalam was elected as the 11th president of India in 2002. He was very popular so was called “People’s President”. After his term he went back to teaching and writing. He was a recipient of several prestigious awards, including the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour.
